About
A CLE series, not a collection of talks
Litigation 101 is an independent continuing legal education series on practical litigation skills, taught by Gabriel White and Patrick Burt. It runs as a connected series of nine one-hour sessions, October 2026 through May 2027, following the life of a case: intake and case evaluation, pleadings, written discovery, depositions, experts, dispositive motions, settlement, and trial.
Who it’s for
The series is built for lawyers in their first years of litigation practice — but “101” describes the subject matter, not the audience. These are the fundamentals as experienced litigators actually practice them, and lawyers at any stage are welcome. If you’ve ever finished a deposition wondering whether it accomplished anything, this series is for you.
How sessions work
Each session runs one hour, 12:00 PM–1:00 PM Mountain Time, and is delivered live online via Zoom. All nine dates are published on the schedule. Each session page states its own Utah MCLE accreditation status — accreditation is applied for one session at a time, so an approval for one session says nothing about the others.
The philosophy
Law school teaches doctrine. Practice teaches judgment — usually the hard way. This series tries to shorten that gap: concrete techniques, real examples, and the checklists and forms we wish someone had handed us. Every session ends with something you can use in a case the next morning.
Registration and CLE credit
Registration for Litigation 101 is handled by Litigation 101, on this site. Register for any open session from the schedule or from the session’s own page; each session page states its fee and its Utah MCLE status.
6 of 9 sessions have been approved for Utah MCLE credit so far. Each session page states its own accreditation status — credit is never implied for a session that has not been approved.
Litigation 101 is an independent program. It is not operated, sponsored, or controlled by the Utah State Bar or the Young Lawyers Division.
